Summarising a Passage

In PTE, one of the writing sections is summarising. For this task, you are required to read a passage and summarise it using only one sentence. You have only 10 minutes for this task. This can be quite difficult for some students but with good strategies, you can very quickly extract the information you need.

On the computer it will look something like this:

One simple way to approach this particular task is to use the 5 W's (and 1 H) approach of Who? What? When? Where? Why? How? Using this, will allow us to extract the important information quickly.

  • Who?
    Mona Khalil and Habiba Fayed

  • What?
    Save the Mediterranean sea turtles

  • When?
    2000

  • Where?
    Southern Lebanon

  • Why?
To protect them because they are endangered.

  • How?
Protect the nests by burying an iron grid in the sand above the eggs.

Once you have this information, you then need to put it all together into one sentence of 75 words or less. This requires a good understanding of punctuation in order to do it well. So on top of practicing, I strongly suggest revising your punctuation knowledge in order to make this task easier for yourself.

This is just one of the many strategies I will teach you for your PTE preparation.
